It's been awhile, but I just had to share this...<br />
On June 3 my husband Scot launched his first-ever <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/herbst/hyve">Kickstarter campaign</a> called 'HYVE'. He has been working so hard on this project.<br />
<br />
There are multiple ways to use the HYVE system:<br />
<br />
Craft Room Organization<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN82scHltRyw5zRgkVFqfdlXG9eMsF0LhkaMvMOiaGyAkBf5vdkMonXuitK0lCDe4EMtB0InTSMIOJHg2ymn0_uOnELZObpvHNBs5LFU5YxQHfdws_4D9_dTZDalIn9HPN31Bhnv_sUY0W/s1600/HYVE_herbstprodukt_craftroom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN82scHltRyw5zRgkVFqfdlXG9eMsF0LhkaMvMOiaGyAkBf5vdkMonXuitK0lCDe4EMtB0InTSMIOJHg2ymn0_uOnELZObpvHNBs5LFU5YxQHfdws_4D9_dTZDalIn9HPN31Bhnv_sUY0W/s1600/HYVE_herbstprodukt_craftroom.jpg" height="216" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Magnetic Surfaces (NOTE: Fabric Coupon :-) )<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnK6bTcBlcw1KsJBLcmfMrbLyyOTSgGgREJvFqVCKEFqQd2KKYt_u6yo7tyQ_bFIk8Ac36fAKfLyKl0cPMx2-0a33EOo8grvLsmaLdYD9GkzlQITkRFjjbab2CaVgU377s97aDoX_OlhrN/s1600/HYVE_whiteboard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnK6bTcBlcw1KsJBLcmfMrbLyyOTSgGgREJvFqVCKEFqQd2KKYt_u6yo7tyQ_bFIk8Ac36fAKfLyKl0cPMx2-0a33EOo8grvLsmaLdYD9GkzlQITkRFjjbab2CaVgU377s97aDoX_OlhrN/s1600/HYVE_whiteboard.jpg" height="260" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
My favorite... HYVEs + HYVE Planks for vertical organization or home decor.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj12_1oW2ivZsbNOPKC3MjIJcD3UvKyBXpBTgKFNeB1sE7eJ0FJYTd8RQ96A4kQTY-ewKu86oQE72yNMAJ-GaYE1t0w2T1Goap6pTEkMgp25Z1jriRWbBWKuPHqYrYLv_QNRhiLR9TIhssw/s1600/HYVE_herbstprodukt_plants.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj12_1oW2ivZsbNOPKC3MjIJcD3UvKyBXpBTgKFNeB1sE7eJ0FJYTd8RQ96A4kQTY-ewKu86oQE72yNMAJ-GaYE1t0w2T1Goap6pTEkMgp25Z1jriRWbBWKuPHqYrYLv_QNRhiLR9TIhssw/s1600/HYVE_herbstprodukt_plants.jpg" height="400" width="396" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lovely, right? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We would LOVE a link, pin, share or your support! 28 days to go! (Did I mention the whole Kickstarter situation is totally nerve wracking? uggh.) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks for stopping by. Wish us luck! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cheers! ~Amy</div>

So I decided to jump at the opportunity to dig into the ol' felt and fabric stash and make up some things to sell. Aside from an open studio event that I participated in a few years ago, this will be my first time tabling at an event. Yippee!<br />
<br />
Here's a peek at what I've been up to:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5AhKo0zldpcp15BahlBHDk1oVuyn55iQpzbH6Wf0e5r9vJ5lgJeRt7dSIThjj9XR_w1eZy-XUImbqdo3IQNTKwxcEL0PenPPbc_HdLy4X3FN5wquGU2v0192n4Aeab2sOZN9vdPODACHh/s1600/100_2705.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5AhKo0zldpcp15BahlBHDk1oVuyn55iQpzbH6Wf0e5r9vJ5lgJeRt7dSIThjj9XR_w1eZy-XUImbqdo3IQNTKwxcEL0PenPPbc_HdLy4X3FN5wquGU2v0192n4Aeab2sOZN9vdPODACHh/s400/100_2705.JPG" width="385" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course I had to make a basket of my signature <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/62444720/pattern-pdf-scrappy-rabbit">"Scrappy Rabbits"</a>. These guys are all one-of-a-kind patchwork bunny rattles with a big bell in the middle. They are weighted in the bottom so they stand up on their own too!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizq4HjhKFsss3NycI114cNWaayJ7UEhGYQUTnlkr6KRT3Pgxt41IvJOd2fLvk3sCvjaa7xB_GbZ52EFa7o5vnDP3hVISB006m5oCU8-dvB5LfhpRWnwywK6o5WYhR0BqyfDPJD2Xk_J5eO/s1600/100_2709.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="281" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizq4HjhKFsss3NycI114cNWaayJ7UEhGYQUTnlkr6KRT3Pgxt41IvJOd2fLvk3sCvjaa7xB_GbZ52EFa7o5vnDP3hVISB006m5oCU8-dvB5LfhpRWnwywK6o5WYhR0BqyfDPJD2Xk_J5eO/s400/100_2709.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
A sampling of 100% wool felt girly hair clippies (I have a couple of these made up as brooches too).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSqZ7FoDBVQT4tBUbSh_NQnm8oostpuMvge6tCocv1WT3w1qMHSUx0ro_vvDQW3uhkLvY2TxdlgbdCvw4NdkkWliXfGAl-Mf4Y4aEPNf0MzZ0iDlWdkCPLZOQ9gWIwZdkwwJtb-h3z_IDf/s1600/100_2711.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="257" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSqZ7FoDBVQT4tBUbSh_NQnm8oostpuMvge6tCocv1WT3w1qMHSUx0ro_vvDQW3uhkLvY2TxdlgbdCvw4NdkkWliXfGAl-Mf4Y4aEPNf0MzZ0iDlWdkCPLZOQ9gWIwZdkwwJtb-h3z_IDf/s320/100_2711.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The van ornaments are also back! With an amazing illustration by my husband, <a href="http://www.herbstprodukt.com/">Scot</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzlDB3PNBHqF7tHQuJBBD3kpTRQxKnyrDCuqIywClU7SToZqK6LzNtrAVMY4FgtbDGFi299MAkiaPXzZ_6o0Ti_VfLQffCQKhm9avQdpfUWSmVSsUINnuytz6JpFubArveKirRhwOE16eD/s1600/knitBear_ornament.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzlDB3PNBHqF7tHQuJBBD3kpTRQxKnyrDCuqIywClU7SToZqK6LzNtrAVMY4FgtbDGFi299MAkiaPXzZ_6o0Ti_VfLQffCQKhm9avQdpfUWSmVSsUINnuytz6JpFubArveKirRhwOE16eD/s320/knitBear_ornament.jpg" width="235" /></a></div>
And I have a variety of supercute hand-knit bear ornaments (in different color combos) handemade by my awesome ultra-crafty mom and sent with love from North Carolina. :-)<br />
<br />
I have a cute purse (that I'm tempted to keep), some zip pouches, felt and fabric trinket bowls and more!<br />
<br />
My friend Elizabeth will be sharing the table with me with her one-of-a-kind handmade Holiday stockings and and necklaces.<br />
<br />
We've worked so hard on putting this together.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type='text/javascript' src='http://www.etsy.com/etsy_mini.js'></script><script type='text/javascript'>new EtsyNameSpace.Mini(102440, 'shop','gallery',4,1).renderIframe();</script></div>Amy Herbsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09840878824911405565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2805626324126687413.post-52363054434045551142012-10-29T16:51:00.000-07:002012-10-29T16:51:10.205-07:00Bike Lock CozieFinally a use for some of my leftover sock yarn! A little crocheted tube to fit over my old bike lock.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigyXtuZHtgmxvjS5JuZPltYEsuHurCPv_wrPhtl58XVuDfPh16_2r5ynJQqoWx6YbathQuZ5ha2XOLaIZq54KjrKjPWuRwmB85gXIn2xK5qaKg0Ryj-ghM5uKm75LAcDqzILBYBQj7PuV5/s1600/100_2544.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigyXtuZHtgmxvjS5JuZPltYEsuHurCPv_wrPhtl58XVuDfPh16_2r5ynJQqoWx6YbathQuZ5ha2XOLaIZq54KjrKjPWuRwmB85gXIn2xK5qaKg0Ryj-ghM5uKm75LAcDqzILBYBQj7PuV5/s400/100_2544.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
It actually does help protect my bicycle's paint job. And something about that cozy, stripey wool yarn just makes me happy. :-)<br />
<br /><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type='text/javascript' src='http://www.etsy.com/etsy_mini.js'></script><script type='text/javascript'>new EtsyNameSpace.Mini(102440, 'shop','gallery',4,1).renderIframe();</script></div>Amy Herbsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09840878824911405565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2805626324126687413.post-58005831261149119782012-10-16T11:28:00.002-07:002012-10-16T11:28:42.245-07:00A New Look For Old BootsMy daughter was upset last week when it really rained for the first time of the season and she discovered her hot pink rain boots no longer fit. Brother's didn't fit either, so she instantly received a "new" pair of boots (and, as you might know, instant gratification is thrilling for a 4-year-old! ). Although she was content with her new navy blue boots, her eyes lit up when I suggested I might be able to make them prettier for her.<br />
<br />
So I did...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwTIL-s2OW_dMQn96tMT6aUz-kz2jW6mO4C2jFHLctAfowu1fKn67l1yJ6feQrfXENHQV8o7cauJow2ceP2OZDQol0bqnfXTt9e1ZG5JXnC3R-8yVOrTntH9fDMNODD6zxi_p3c7VZHg1N/s1600/100_2678.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwTIL-s2OW_dMQn96tMT6aUz-kz2jW6mO4C2jFHLctAfowu1fKn67l1yJ6feQrfXENHQV8o7cauJow2ceP2OZDQol0bqnfXTt9e1ZG5JXnC3R-8yVOrTntH9fDMNODD6zxi_p3c7VZHg1N/s320/100_2678.JPG" width="265" /></a></div>
Even though I was too anxious to give them a really good scrub down, I think they turned out soo cute! Rain boots inspired by a sunny Autumn day. I am excited to see what she thinks when she gets home from preschool.<br />
<br />
If you are wondering how I did this, here is my secret tool:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBf_k0j293OlIRmvnFuk-924tLo8VdkM4ES5uKZdGvAcBuwQ1th6nBp73SI2TaW5j_xW2-IWbQAhCkqmr6J_bEszfGu3VWXPQpl5v9yc705jWlbVyV21UkuPn1Pm6pmpVk88Aue4ycF8x1/s1600/OilMarkerMed_Aqua.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="46" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBf_k0j293OlIRmvnFuk-924tLo8VdkM4ES5uKZdGvAcBuwQ1th6nBp73SI2TaW5j_xW2-IWbQAhCkqmr6J_bEszfGu3VWXPQpl5v9yc705jWlbVyV21UkuPn1Pm6pmpVk88Aue4ycF8x1/s320/OilMarkerMed_Aqua.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="http://www.sharpie.com/enUS/Pages/oil-based-paint-marker-medium-point.aspx">Medium-tipped, Sharpie OIL PAINT markers</a>. The "oil paint" part is pretty key. Cool, huh? As for durability, we'll see. I did a few designs on my gardening shoes (also Crocs) using a silver oil-paint Sharpie a few years back. They have held up, no problem. I am hoping the same for these boots! The texture of the Crocs really helps too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR-rO8-jXjfUKU_SMAWOJvNnRciJgTxnoA7bukMgqaQAjDeTsJhotntBO8B-jDLPFIULpy5X7hGhLOZqf2_M1bPmOgrFVUp4uoAaXlO6gpawHzZ6WXrElpS3hdr-FFRraDpYL96Jd59SMZ/s1600/100_2679.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR-rO8-jXjfUKU_SMAWOJvNnRciJgTxnoA7bukMgqaQAjDeTsJhotntBO8B-jDLPFIULpy5X7hGhLOZqf2_M1bPmOgrFVUp4uoAaXlO6gpawHzZ6WXrElpS3hdr-FFRraDpYL96Jd59SMZ/s320/100_2679.JPG" width="233" /></a></div>
If you do something similar and blog about it be sure to let me know. I'd love to see what your up too. Thanks for your wonderful comments on my <a href="http://herbsthandmade.blogspot.com/2010/12/giving-back-giveaway.html">URCHIN bowl giveaway post</a>! <br />
<br />
The winner is.... Thought & Found, who commented: "I don't really do anything particularly large to give back, but I do lots of little things. I give money to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto (I was a patient once upon a time...), I always give to the Canadian Diabetes Association when they do a pick-up, and I have a bag of food waiting for my next trip to the supermarket, where I'll drop it in the bin for the local food bank. Every little bit counts!"<br />
<br />
Nice work, and congratulations!<br />

<br />
Here's what I've been up to : <br />
-Last week I sewed labels on 20 cut-and-tied fleece blankets for <a href="http://www.projectlinus.org/">Project Linus</a> (and there were TONS more that others made and labeled - go PL 'Blanketeers'!) <br />
<br />
-I helped load a big-rig with lots of bikes and helmets for a local non-profit called <a href="http://www.turningwheelsforkids.org/">Turning Wheels for Kids</a> (although I can't volunteer at their 'bike build' on Saturday now because DH has to go to Seattle. Boo.). <br />
<br />
-And, I helped sort a mountain (no kidding) of toys for the group <a href="http://www.toysfortots.org/default.asp">Toys for Tots</a>. <br />
<br />
All of this volunteering only took a couple of hours of my time, but was so fun and rewarding. In addition, I am making an effort to be more kind to my friends, family...and myself. I know I could do more to give back, but at least it's a start.<br />
<br />
Sooo... In the spirit of the Season and inspiring others to "do good" I am thinking a giveaway is in order!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZm3ZKZncEUl2yjEUGjUd5ec14T7imc0YW3l14UuBY3RjFI4Tpht7o_KZw7ucTSRayNND7tlN_XwIMO_48fWh0hmKqEcGacf3X6U4dFLQ69iqU0HxpcoMqhiOY5flWBfadHLs0cr1Gs_-C/s1600/PeachURCHINBowl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="336" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZm3ZKZncEUl2yjEUGjUd5ec14T7imc0YW3l14UuBY3RjFI4Tpht7o_KZw7ucTSRayNND7tlN_XwIMO_48fWh0hmKqEcGacf3X6U4dFLQ69iqU0HxpcoMqhiOY5flWBfadHLs0cr1Gs_-C/s400/PeachURCHINBowl.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>You could win one of my handmade, 100% wool felt 'Urchin' bowls (as pictured above in a lovely soft orange called "nectarine"--jingle bells NOT included)<br />
<br />
THE DETAILS: Just leave a comment below telling me what <i>you've</i> done to give back, OR something nice you are planning to do, OR a link to your favorite charity or non-profit organization. Please be sure to leave your email address. I'll select a winner, at random, next Monday morning 12/13/2010. Do good ... and good luck!<br />
<br />
P.S. If you're interested in making your own URCHIN bowls you can <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/62533179/new-sewing-pattern-pdf-urchin-3mm-wool">purchase the pattern here</a>.<br />

And along the way, they grabbed a couple of new Matryoshka pillow doll friends.<br />

I'm glad I was finally able to get it together to make for the Quilt Museum shop. <a href="http://www.southfirstfridays.com/2010/11/december-3-2010-art-walk/">South First Friday in downtown San Jose</a> is tomorrow (Dec 3), and I hope they have a great turnout. If you're in San Jose the Quilt Museum (and shop) are definitely worth checking out.<br />
<br />
Now, off to start sewing labels on the 20 fleece blankets that I picked up this morning from our <a href="http://herbsthandmade.blogspot.com/2007/11/b-l-u-e.html">Project Linus</a> chapter. (20 doesn't sound like much,... but you should see this bag of blankets(!). Project Linus volunteers are amazing!).<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOgToFb2OgIq_DVVz9jTfhbPJPALCuQOiQEL15TWpdz5ygnWdy9J1DJeZmldhYgyf6W2_LJoW3Ydbz7IB1Vpvt7Y-Ne0ACcP82QcvWOiZwJQle09_vySl92WOO6Ckbm0FbmtSAM6PTUWbq/s1600/PersimmGray_sideby_cropped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOgToFb2OgIq_DVVz9jTfhbPJPALCuQOiQEL15TWpdz5ygnWdy9J1DJeZmldhYgyf6W2_LJoW3Ydbz7IB1Vpvt7Y-Ne0ACcP82QcvWOiZwJQle09_vySl92WOO6Ckbm0FbmtSAM6PTUWbq/s320/PersimmGray_sideby_cropped.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The bowls are simple to make. The thick wool felt has a sculptural quality and it feels great--soft and squishy. The best part is that the bowls are relatively unbreakable (an important feature around our house!).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghP54BbaEvm_LCA4QlhNQfa7hHbQ1MdePxHUyDWvwKvc9EP4KTghStrr5loU2Dj5goDqrK1ABSd44rcwsPkefkSRGvIQ_5FnvSSIiSpU7Gby-RSVpBcB7avxNnXY6HEiw75fRM8VSphboH/s1600/PeacockJuniper_nested_cropped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghP54BbaEvm_LCA4QlhNQfa7hHbQ1MdePxHUyDWvwKvc9EP4KTghStrr5loU2Dj5goDqrK1ABSd44rcwsPkefkSRGvIQ_5FnvSSIiSpU7Gby-RSVpBcB7avxNnXY6HEiw75fRM8VSphboH/s320/PeacockJuniper_nested_cropped.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Filled with your favorite sweets, I think these felt bowl sets would make fantastic Holiday party hostess gifts.<br />

Not that she wouldn't go for a plastic dolly, if given the chance mind you. But with all the bad news on plastics, I've been trying to steer clear of the ubiquitous PVC-made-in-china dolly types if possible.<br />
<br />
She has a tiny little German Kathe Kruse Waldorf-style doll named <a href="http://herbsthandmade.blogspot.com/2009/12/sweater-for-sweetpea.html">"Friend"</a> that she sleeps with and takes lots of places. She loves Friend so much, for her 2nd, I decided give Waldorf doll making a go.<br />
<br />
I bought a <a href="http://www.weirdollsandcrafts.com/waldorf-doll-kit/flannel-doll-kit.html">Waldorf doll kit from Weir Crafts</a> . It was fantastic! It only took me a few hours to make the doll (really, I made it the night before her b-day), and it turned out so cute. Sure, there are a few things I'll do differently next time, but over all I'm thrilled with how she turned out! <br />

<br />
FINALLY finished a strip quilt for my littlest one. Made with two charm packs of Wonderland by Momo for Moda. It ended up being a bit smaller than a twin size, but just perfect for a two-year-old... and snuggling on the couch.<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnnmg2mEFiDiN09VojYpDW_LwZzZtTMeEfGC38OGuv6fgmTsLA4rOl0aby8lBPmcIQNzciklID05eIavV7534HmYJxsmRblrYtoYW8MZ1dXU292eXTcxeeIbjkzUzuqt7FaOZaCu4q58M-/s1600/AyaQuiltFB_2033.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh5RnOFg5BGsEEW0-TbYxw-1WZYmBw1GPh_mkREqUahojOGW63pSJxtyG4NAzebIJuf3GVS2jisQgMDkhy7WcfRrSlRly65pObxV9mGcnLwWjYCTagyPESvpqpgakSwBe-DkzNoFYkfnaB/s1600/AyaQuiltFB_2032.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="305" px="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh5RnOFg5BGsEEW0-TbYxw-1WZYmBw1GPh_mkREqUahojOGW63pSJxtyG4NAzebIJuf3GVS2jisQgMDkhy7WcfRrSlRly65pObxV9mGcnLwWjYCTagyPESvpqpgakSwBe-DkzNoFYkfnaB/s320/AyaQuiltFB_2032.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">I didn't have any of the Wonderland fabric for the backing, so I added a Robert Kaufman print (I think I'm remembering that correctly), with a few blocks of the fabric on the top, to tie it all together.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I don't know. It was bad. REALLY, really bad. And on Saturday morning when I was supposed to be riding my bicycle I could hardly get out of bed. <br />
The situation could've been much worse, but luckily (for me), the hub got back from his business trip just in time to take care of the kids. The bright side is that no one else seems to have gotten it. Of that I am truly thankful.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type='text/javascript' src='http://www.etsy.com/etsy_mini.js'></script><script type='text/javascript'>new EtsyNameSpace.Mini(102440, 'shop','gallery',4,1).renderIframe();</script></div>Amy Herbsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09840878824911405565noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2805626324126687413.post-55753499940885216272010-04-07T14:05:00.000-07:002010-04-07T14:05:03.047-07:00Getting ready to ride...OK, first off I've decided to stop beating myself up about taking long breaks from my blog and Etsy shop. My life with two little ones is still crazy and chaotic and challenging and wonderful and I'm doing the best I can. There. I feel better now! :-)<br />
<br />
Lukily, I have been able to get some recent crafting in and that's tied to something exciting I'm doing this Saturday... I'm riding a metric century! Yep, 100km on my bike. The first time I've participated in a ride like this in at least seven years. It's part of my "2010 I'm not having any more kids and I'm ready to get my body back and be more like my old self" program. Woo hoo! Now, let's just hope I can still move on Sunday!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiwNmdB2F9arrw3FKgZqXsuoIa5GcOLVr4LtUvRCv8I8eElPbiYAJoDEC7JYMiPARd_K265wEO2ICUG2-80qQEHLT5idZbUkYrYP_zHNq9hNxebwRzbS_vf5wVfDUSJ8m8DZUOUFGQ4cSu/s1600-h/allisonsknitloop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ps="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiwNmdB2F9arrw3FKgZqXsuoIa5GcOLVr4LtUvRCv8I8eElPbiYAJoDEC7JYMiPARd_K265wEO2ICUG2-80qQEHLT5idZbUkYrYP_zHNq9hNxebwRzbS_vf5wVfDUSJ8m8DZUOUFGQ4cSu/s400/allisonsknitloop.jpg" /></a><br />
</div>... a knitted 'loop' baby toy! Made by fellow (super-talented) crafter Alli. So clever! Alli says that she followed my <a href="http://herbsthandmade.blogspot.com/2009/01/crochet-tutorial-loop.html">'loop'</a> baby toy crochet pattern, but used a set of size 6 DPNS to knit the toy instead of crocheting it. I LOVE it (and wondering why I didn't think of it ;-)). Check out her lovely blog at: <a href="http://www.onepearlbutton.com/">"one pearl button"</a>. Thanks Alli!<div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type='text/javascript' src='http://www.etsy.com/etsy_mini.js'></script><script type='text/javascript'>new EtsyNameSpace.Mini(102440, 'shop','gallery',4,1).renderIframe();</script></div>Amy Herbsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09840878824911405565noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2805626324126687413.post-53988250735304252422009-12-19T11:41:00.000-08:002010-01-17T08:15:37.155-08:00There's still time to knit a cabled scarflette!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I always tell myself that 'next year' I'll have all my Holiday gift-making done way in advance (um, I think I said "October" last year... HA!). Of course it never happens and I find myself scrambling to figure out what to make. Grrr.<br />
</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV1R-ixLQLzc55FkpJY_7NEjBE0KmHNjMbxI1HlGJ9zgSquORylooduXE5We8fkbl0a7acuwlRTJWtMKhIxCwK3po3NI5XAlU8lp6pT-sERrbmpH3Hnes1Iicl9U8VlOh7khyphenhyphen9C0sIM25T/s1600-h/scarflette04_cropped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ps="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV1R-ixLQLzc55FkpJY_7NEjBE0KmHNjMbxI1HlGJ9zgSquORylooduXE5We8fkbl0a7acuwlRTJWtMKhIxCwK3po3NI5XAlU8lp6pT-sERrbmpH3Hnes1Iicl9U8VlOh7khyphenhyphen9C0sIM25T/s400/scarflette04_cropped.jpg" /></a><br />
</div>Thankfully, this year the stars were aligned and I found a fun yarn on sale (LionBrand's Wool-ease Thick and Quick) and a great pattern for a lovely cabled neck warmer by Robyn Grauer <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/a-neck-warmer-for-coreen#">here</a> on Ravelry. The warmers use only one skein, knit up in an evening and, are super soft and warm. It was such a satisfying knit that I made four! I played around with cable patterns and colorways on each.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsjD9ra81zWWxXWi95av_PrbI3_pZ1TdPWggFRBeggRf4L8QRFmwNHDx2bnenPC66VYBOzdB5BnglpWIaaKNKxwG1oa3DxCKZoEDmHaGnL69lwfKEArgh_oqhCER1U4NsM4j8k4RFGAx7S/s1600-h/scarflette07_verycropped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ps="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsjD9ra81zWWxXWi95av_PrbI3_pZ1TdPWggFRBeggRf4L8QRFmwNHDx2bnenPC66VYBOzdB5BnglpWIaaKNKxwG1oa3DxCKZoEDmHaGnL69lwfKEArgh_oqhCER1U4NsM4j8k4RFGAx7S/s320/scarflette07_verycropped.jpg" /></a><br />
</div><br />
I did make a few modifications to Robyns pattern. Here's exactly what I did for the one in the pic:<br />
1 skein <a href="http://cache.lionbrand.com/yarns/we-thick.htm">LionBrand wool-ease Thick & Quick</a> in Pumpkin<br />
Size U.S. 13 knitting needles <br />
Cast on 18 sts<br />
Knit 4 rows<br />
I used the <a href="http://cache.lionbrand.com/faq/304?.html?language=En">"Cruller"</a> cable pattern from LionBrand's online stitch library (a great resource). I put the cable pattern section in brackets [ ] below.<br />
Row 1: K4, P2, [K2, P2, K2], P2, K4<br />
Row 2: K3, P1, K2, [P2, K2, P2], K2, P1, K3<br />
Row 3: K4, P2, [K2, P2, K2], P2, K4<br />
Row 4: K3, P1, K2, [P2, K2, P2], K2, P1, K3<br />
Row 5: K4, P2, [Sl 3 sts to cable needle and hold in back, K3, K3 sts from cable needle], P2, K4<br />
Row 6: K3, P1, K2, [P6], K2, P1, K3<br />
Row 7: K4, P2, [K6], P2, K4<br />
Row 8: K3, P1, K2, [P6], K2, P1, K3<br />
Row 9: K4, P2, [Sl 3 sts to cable needle and hold in back, K3, K3 sts from cable needle], P2, K4<br />
Row 10: K3, P1, K2, [P6], K2, P1, K3<br />
Row 11: K4, P2, [K2, P2, K2], P2, K4<br />
Row 12: K3, P1, K2, [P2, K2, P2], K2, P1, K3<br />
Repeat Rows 1-12 for pattern until piece reaches desired length (I think I did about 7 repeats)<br />
Knit next two rows.<br />
Next row (buttonholes): K2, YO, K2tog, K5, YO, K2tog, K4, YO, K2tog, K1<br />
Knit next row. Bind off all stitches.<br />
<br />
Wow, it looks complicated all typed out like that, but it really is very easy and once you get going it knits up super fast. Happy knitting! :-)<div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type='text/javascript' src='http://www.etsy.com/etsy_mini.js'></script><script type='text/javascript'>new EtsyNameSpace.Mini(102440, 'shop','gallery',4,1).renderIframe();</script></div>Amy Herbsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09840878824911405565noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2805626324126687413.post-61780760415134720732009-12-04T14:43:00.000-08:002009-12-04T14:48:34.886-08:00Golden<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">Although the leaves are long gone in some parts of the country, here in California (in my neighborhood at least) the change is reaching it's peak. This is my favorite time of year... and this is the gorgeous golden mess that our Ginko trees left on the sidewalk in front of our house this week:<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghlncKn3XgPbO1hyphenhyphenuzlmJOWu_IATiRW6_15LSCsQ1mMaVhSODZQMEUrQ06Jpks1t9EbmvcGHQ5PyG7viohmUQyBcwfJ1Egg42wBcyBxA5PAU2Ep-zJ021Wjb2_8ZraZ0kTO-ZGwzf957-K/s1600-h/kaiandayaleaves_blog100_1569.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" er="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghlncKn3XgPbO1hyphenhyphenuzlmJOWu_IATiRW6_15LSCsQ1mMaVhSODZQMEUrQ06Jpks1t9EbmvcGHQ5PyG7viohmUQyBcwfJ1Egg42wBcyBxA5PAU2Ep-zJ021Wjb2_8ZraZ0kTO-ZGwzf957-K/s640/kaiandayaleaves_blog100_1569.jpg" /></a><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We also went gold inside as I gave the kids' art table a much needed refresh. Of course, in my excitement I neglected to take a "before" pic, but let me just tell you it was a mess. Left outside in the rain after a finger painting adventure.<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_4TO_DD91DkGKSEtgppDOlkjE195Lbbtd9sh0YUpnqVxtZoJPOzDj_2mkcjTcD_t7UUsU0SXzl79XamMGKN4D68rr_Tvm_C5KVa4NyzkW1c_28c4xI-G7_GI0KJ8EVofWoCw67wLVmBA3/s1600-h/goldendesk100_1596.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" er="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_4TO_DD91DkGKSEtgppDOlkjE195Lbbtd9sh0YUpnqVxtZoJPOzDj_2mkcjTcD_t7UUsU0SXzl79XamMGKN4D68rr_Tvm_C5KVa4NyzkW1c_28c4xI-G7_GI0KJ8EVofWoCw67wLVmBA3/s640/goldendesk100_1596.jpg" /></a><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The color was supposed to be orange (by request) but ended up way more golden (school bus) yellow. The seat covers are an asian-inspired patchwork print that I had in my fabric stash. It was a lot more work than I anticipated but I love how it came out.<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Just before Thanksgiving I finished this adorable sweater for my little sweetpea. The pattern is <a href="http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer08/PATThelena.html">"Helena"</a> from Knitty. I used Patons ultra soft Silk-Bamboo yarn. I think the colorway is "Plum".<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPiAE6QXWvnM3r0bs2SnOY1NuJJLsd9ai4kff9-vkgYAAuSw_NNWOhLv0d6e4AzFkodE-tcsqq50y8wjzchWN8LRmTdLVK9yLhQf4fy4kYOTFGYxLGDEwuWn23_FlA-rSzBoTc7pCUNaFr/s1600-h/Ayasweater2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" er="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPiAE6QXWvnM3r0bs2SnOY1NuJJLsd9ai4kff9-vkgYAAuSw_NNWOhLv0d6e4AzFkodE-tcsqq50y8wjzchWN8LRmTdLVK9yLhQf4fy4kYOTFGYxLGDEwuWn23_FlA-rSzBoTc7pCUNaFr/s320/Ayasweater2.jpg" /></a><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The sweater is a pretty quick knit. I modified the pattern to have only four repeats on the lace. I also wanted a short-sleeve, because a.) I thought it would look really cute and b.) I was afraid I might run out of yarn. I also added vintage brass buttons, instead of ties.<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH9NKkVevy64_dXUnULafMR7ttJK5mGg5XL7F94tJmzx5tJB7Veyi8c2tYwyaPEWW5nMUuNFVllJJCrlwxXd4aJZtUIY07_XJSuGjtsXmfVUJzUCe1eHLK3lpwXDUzGpXUrjDUtbporyvq/s1600-h/Ayasweater1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" er="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH9NKkVevy64_dXUnULafMR7ttJK5mGg5XL7F94tJmzx5tJB7Veyi8c2tYwyaPEWW5nMUuNFVllJJCrlwxXd4aJZtUIY07_XJSuGjtsXmfVUJzUCe1eHLK3lpwXDUzGpXUrjDUtbporyvq/s320/Ayasweater1.jpg" /></a><br />
</div>The only bummer is that, in my inexperience, I picked up too few stitches along the front and neck, so it has a bit of a pucker. Drat! I might try blocking to see if I can get it to lay flatter. Otherwise, I'm thrilled with how it turned out!<div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type='text/javascript' src='http://www.etsy.com/etsy_mini.js'></script><script type='text/javascript'>new EtsyNameSpace.Mini(102440, 'shop','gallery',4,1).renderIframe();</script></div>Amy Herbsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09840878824911405565noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2805626324126687413.post-41315627401272885442009-11-30T15:54:00.000-08:002009-12-03T07:45:10.187-08:00Little Modern Movement<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoLywQK3_rbd5tokD2243ila-a4lISar8POEkJYlRBQtMkl7C5SM2U-dUDpiAgNsXe_KWRNYKcjNT7cB235rxN4Q8QNaRAbG83FMm9HTDyHmIRB6gJcaM8l6KxkNqmFQOz6tfbm6ZDUW3P/s1600/AyaStrollkart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoLywQK3_rbd5tokD2243ila-a4lISar8POEkJYlRBQtMkl7C5SM2U-dUDpiAgNsXe_KWRNYKcjNT7cB235rxN4Q8QNaRAbG83FMm9HTDyHmIRB6gJcaM8l6KxkNqmFQOz6tfbm6ZDUW3P/s320/AyaStrollkart.jpg" style="cursor: move;" unselectable="on" yr="true" /></a><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My husband has designed a super mod collection of bent plywood toys. Our new business is called <a href="http://www.kaikudesign.com/collection/">Kaiku</a> and our site is FINALLY up!
